Learn about key updates to a guidance document for forest roads in a new webinar from Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC).
The document Joint Professional Practice Guidelines on Professional Services in the Forest Sector: Forest Roads was completed by Forest Professionals BC and Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) in October.
The webinar Updated Guidance for Professional Services in the Forest Sector – Forest Roads will:
- illustrate the importance of professional oversight of forest roads under the Professional Governance Act (PGA);
- connect climate change implications to professional practice;
- provide clarity on professional practice expectations over the life cycle of a forest road; and
- expand on the core competencies in this practice area.

Presenters:
- Garnet Mierau, RPF, director of practice, FPBC;
- Lindsay Steele, PGeo, associate director, professional practice, EGBC;
- Lee Deslauriers, P.Eng, RPF, principal and managing engineer, StoneCroft Engineering; and
- Jeremy Araki, P.Eng, senior engineer, principal, Onsite Engineering Ltd.
Mierau is responsible for ensuring standards of practice and competence are developed, clearly articulated, and conveyed to all forest professionals of BC. He also leads professional practice and conduct advice for all registrants.
Steele is responsible for the development and management of practice and competency standards for individual EGBC registrants. She oversees the practice advice program, the continuing education program, the individual audit and practice review programs, and the initiation and development of professional practice guidelines and practice advisories.
Deslauriers is StoneCroft’s managing engineer, with a primary focus on safety, environmental stewardship, practicality, and collaboration. Deslauriers specializes in planning, design, construction, and management of resource sector infrastructure in steep, mountainous terrain and log-handling facilities and heavy civil projects. He has also co-authored technical papers and professional practice guidelines on resource roads and crossings.
Araki is a professional engineer registered in BC, Alberta, and the Yukon, with an engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick. Araki has more than 20 years of experience working in BC and has gained experience in bridge site survey, design, and construction supervision; repair strategies for road and bridges; development of road maintenance plans; retaining wall and foundation design; structural analysis; and analysis of wood structures.
