Overview

The VP of Operations' role is to grow their management team to deliver our business and services in the natural resource sector.  They will work closely with the Regional Managers, Clients, and Project Sponsors to create cohesion for a balanced project/functional matrix organization. This position is responsible for our resources – equipment, facilities, and most importantly, our people. The VP of Operations provides direct leadership through effective performance management and engagement and is continually striving to build and maintain a solid organizational culture that promotes SNRC’s values and ethics.  The role is to grow their management team to deliver our business and services in the natural resource sector and collaborate with employees, managers, community members, project leaders, and stakeholders within and outside the Regions and the organization.

Key Result Areas:

Leadership/Management & Human Resources

  • Focus on monitoring and influencing the desired organizational culture within the Regions while ensuring employees have the knowledge and clarity of purpose required to be successful; these guiding purposes inform all leadership decisions and actions.
  • Develop a strong, engaged team that is motivated to achieve SNRC’s Company goals.
  • Enhance leadership and management skills and bench strength throughout operations.
  • Provide direction, support, and open communication to employees on an ongoing basis; proactively foster communication, seek input and feedback, and “check the temperature” of the team/culture through active listening
  • Support CEO and executive peers with business planning, strategy, performance management, compensation structures, etc.
  • Work with senior team to grow and evolve the company.
  • Improve efficiencies and systems with senior management and develop/enact cost reduction activities.
  • Collaborate and communicate with direct reports on an ongoing basis regarding the health of team culture and any relevant employee relations issues to facilitate an aligned, employee-focused, values-driven leadership approach.

 

Communication

  • Pro-actively listen and support employees, Regional Managers, and other internal and external contacts with the information they need to make informed and effective decisions; and
  • Share the right information effectively, at the right time, and with tact and discretion as needed; utilize political understanding and respect confidentiality to determine what information is communicated, with whom, and why.

 

 

Strategic Planning

  • Hold direct reports accountable for meeting their specific strategic plan goals and actions.
  • Support and contribute to operating plans and project plans; identifies opportunities for increased efficiency, effectiveness, or re-alignment; brings recommendations forward as appropriate.
  • Identify resource needs for projects and initiatives to meet business objectives and deadlines; negotiates allocation of resources, plans and schedules program activities such as resources are used effectively to achieve deliverables.
  • Seek opportunities for innovation and streamlining operations; implements approved changes and innovation (conceptualized by self or otherwise) with forward-thinking and change-management approach.

Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Seek out proactive and appropriate opportunities to communicate with and engage community members, and external stakeholders, to establish a positive rapport and build SNRC’s reputation within the community.

Resource Management

  • Efficient utilization of resources, both people and equipment; and
  • Manage and/or oversee the acquisition/replacement/divestment of capital assets.

 

Decision Making & Judgement

  • Consider all factors and stakeholders when making contentious decisions; assesses impact to each stakeholder, and weighs the risk factors as accurately as possible; communicates decisions with all impacted parties, as appropriate.
  • Utilizes political understanding and discretion to inform all decisions; brings complex or sensitive decisions forward to management or other stakeholders as appropriate; and
  • Utilize data, as well as quantitative and qualitative evidence, and a business-case approach to decision-making; calculate risk and take required action with solid defensible reasoning that can be identified and articulated.

 

Health & Safety

  • Support SNRC’s Industry-leading Safety Culture; and
  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations, PPE, and SNRC’s Safety Program

Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • Resource Management Degree or MBA preferred

OR

  • Alternative formal training and/or certification in business, combined with extensive experience, such that business knowledge could be considered equivalent to a degree or diploma-level understanding

Experience:

  • Prior experience in Resource Management and/or related businesses
  • 10+ years’ leadership experience, preferably in a business environment with a mid-sized company
