There is one (1) position located in Nakusp. An eligibility list may be established for similar vacancies within the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area (Nelson, Castlegar, Cranbrook, Grand Forks, Nakusp). Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement. 

Practices Forester

$69,969.42 - $89,774.32 annually 

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests. Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. The Development Team at BCTS Arrow North is a collaborative and established group of professionals, including one Practices Forester, one Planning Forester and two Operations Technologists. Working closely with other field team positions, this team fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and innovation, driving sustainable forest management under BCTS's advanced vision.

The Practices Forester role is integral to advancing sustainable forest management through operational planning, cut block and forest road layout, and silviculture activities, all while ensuring compliance with the Forest Stewardship Plan. This position requires strategic foresight to identify and address potential barriers to project timelines, alongside building strong, collaborative relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • A Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or be eligible for registration as an RPF with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) and two (2) years of experience in operational field forestry activities.
  • Operational field forestry activities include the following:
    • Timber harvesting monitoring/conformance
    • Cut-block development
    • Forest road engineering
    • Silviculture
    • Timber tenure development and administration
    • Planning integrated resource management

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience in more than one (1) operational field forestry activity.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience in contract management.
