THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Forest Products is hiring for a Manager, Log Allocation and Logistics to join our Fibre Supply team in the Nanaimo area.
What You’ll Do: As Manager, Log Allocation and Logistics, you will oversee WFP’s marine log distribution to ensure on-time, on-schedule, lowest cost delivery of logs to WFP’s Manufacturing facilities and external customers. With the support of your Log Delivery Team, you will be responsible for management of our Burleith Log Sort, Ladysmith Dryland Sort and WFP’s foreshore log storage tenures.
Who You Are: As a leader in forestry, you hold a combination of a forestry and/or business university degree, and over 7 years of experience. You are deeply knowledgeable about log handling and distribution, coastal harvesting, lumber markets, manufacturing, and navigating 3Log LIMS. You’re a naturally driven leader and team player, eager to improve current practices and contribute to WFP’s success. An RPF designation and a Scaling Ticket are definite advantages.
Work Environment: This role will be based at WFP’s Nanaimo office, with regular local travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the operations of Log delivery team including barging, towing and resorting operations.
- Contract management of all logistics service providers and contractors including negotiating barge and towing rates.
- Provide management oversight of Burleith Log Sort including union employee relations, production planning and tracking, budgeting, HSMS and EMS program implementation, capital planning and continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide contract management of Ladysmith Dryland Sort including HSMS and EMS implementation.
- Establishing systems and standards for maintenance of WFP’s log, boomstick and gear inventories and ensuring conformance to such standards throughout WFP’s operations
- Inventory reporting to ensure transparency of WFP’s supply chain throughout the business.
- Work with Logistics to utilize appropriate delivery methods that meet customer requirements at the lowest possible cost;
- Maintain standards (ie. Safe Work Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures) to establish performance expectations throughout WFP’s supply chain
- Maintain compliance with all applicable legislation and regulations including but not limited to the Forest Act and Timber Transport Regulations.
- Provide safety leadership throughout the marine supply chain with consideration for all workers, including WFP employees, Service Providers and Contractors.
- Works with finance and senior management to develop log distribution strategy and identify opportunities to streamline log supply chain and drive cost efficiencies.
- With the support of dedicated finance staff, reporting monthly on costs and financial results for the log delivery business unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- 7+ years of experience in the forest industry
- Forestry related or business university degree
- RPF designation an asset
- Scaling Ticket an asset
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
- Strong collaboration skills and excellent communication skills
- Ability to design standardized systems and standard operating procedures
- Working knowledge of 3Log Log Inventory Management System (LIMS)
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite
- Knowledge of log distribution including log towing, barging and booming
- Knowledge of coastal harvesting and log handling practices
- Knowledge of log sorting practices and quality control
- Knowledge of lumber manufacturing and markets
