The Ministry of Environment has a rewarding opportunity as the Forestry Initiatives Advisor within the Forest Stewardship Unit in the Forest Service Branch located in Prince Albert. The Forestry Initiatives Advisor will be a part of our boreal landscapes team that is responsible for developing and integrating landscape-level policies into our policy framework supporting the sustainable development of Saskatchewan’s forests.
As the Forestry Initiatives Advisor, you will:
- Collaborate on developing and integrating new provincial forestry initiatives for biodiversity and conservation lands management and use that will support existing programs, policy, and legislation or develop new policy that is not complementary to program initiatives.
- Act as a Saskatchewan representative for several forestry-related federal-provincial-territory committees that provide a national perspective at the international level. This position provides expert advice to senior management on how to proceed and participate in the committees/programs and provides a Saskatchewan perspective on national forest conservation-related topics.
- Develop engaging approaches and presentation materials to communicate to other branches of the ministry, higher levels of government, forest industry and other industrial sectors that use the forest, and to the public in order to create awareness of the implications of various development scenarios on future forest landscape health. Create an awareness from a forestry perspective of what needs to be considered to optimize future economic opportunities within the forest while maintaining or restoring a healthy forested landscape.
- Collaborate in the development and maintenance of the landscape management plans as they relate to the Pan-Canadian Framework. Tasks will include providing support and coordination of federal, provincial, and territorial meetings as well as technical support to develop a suite of forest landscape indicators of sustainability for incorporation into forest landscape planning.
The competencies required for this position would typically be obtained through a Master’s degree specializing in some aspect of forest management or landscape ecology along with the required undergraduate degree in forestry, natural resources management or environmental biology. A four-year bachelor of science degree in forestry, natural resources or environmental biology management supplemented with five years direct experience in forest policy development or forest management may be considered in lieu of the Master’s requirement. The successful candidate must be eligible for membership with the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals within two years of commencement.
A current and valid driver's licence is required. Travel will be required for attendance of meetings or participating in field tours.
