Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and Environment is seeking a regular, full time (1.0 FTE) Faculty, Forest and Natural Areas Management, who has the skills and knowledge in Forest Measurements and Forest Engineering. The Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM) program trains graduates for employment in a range of fields including industrial forestry, urban forestry, silviculture, arboriculture, GIS, digital field mapping, and natural resources management. Graduates are eligible for registration as Registered Forest Technologists (RFT) in British Columbia and have a number of available pathways to other levels of certification and education.

This position is available as one full-time or two-part time opportunities.

Duties & Responsibilities

The FNAM program is seeking enthusiastic and team-oriented Instructors to teach a variety of courses in the program.

This permanent position may include the following course to teach or co-teach:

Fall term

RENR 1105 Natural Resource Measurements 1

FNAM 3500 Forest Engineering and Operations

FNAM 3700 Fundamentals of Resource Measurements

Winter term

FNAM 2500 Engineering for Resource Roads and Trails

FNAM 2110 Natural Resource Sampling

FNAM 4510 Forest Engineering

FNAM 4700 Applied Forest Measurements for Technologists

Other possible courses may be assigned based on the candidate’s education, knowledge and work experience (examples.: FNAM 1118, 1130, 1200, 2320 and 3350). In your cover letter, please identify the courses that you would like to teach. At BCIT, permanent full-time instructor teaches 15 course credits per term.

Instructional emphasis is on helping students develop applied skills based on a foundation of knowledge required for technologists in resource management and stewardship. General responsibilities will include providing instructing for course and program-level applied learning, including training students in field applications (including equipment use), organizing field-trip logistics, and participating in course and curriculum development if needed. Other responsibilities will be based on the strengths of the successful candidate and the needs of the programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry (or in a related natural resource management discipline) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Recent field and/or operational experience in the course(s) subject matter.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach at the post-secondary level in classroom, field and online settings.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skill.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team, being flexible and adaptable to meet the needs and challenges of a dynamic program.
  • Class 5 driver’s license
  • Class 4 driver’s license, or willingness to obtain one within the first year of employment.
  • From a natural resources or ecosystem lens, knowledge of Indigenous land management, its history and current policies, or the ability to provide access for students to guest lecturers and firsthand resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Forestry or in related natural resource management, or in Education.
  • Minimum three years of recent field and/or operational experience in the subject matter.
  • Professional designation or eligibility to register as a professional is an asset (e.g., RPF, RFT, RPBio, ISA Cert. Arb.).
  • Ability to teach other courses in the FNAM program.

 Salary Range: $63,150 - $110,238 per annum.

Additional Salary Information: Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
