CREW SUPERVISOR / PROJECT LEAD

THE JOB - This engaging and exciting position provides an opportunity to lead the fieldwork component of cutting permit development. This will be largely a field-based position but will also include office time. You will be an integral part of Westland’s team of forest professionals and play a key role in developing junior staff by providing leadership and mentorship. You will also be provided with opportunities to grow and diversify your career in forestry and into other fields of natural resource management.
This position is based in beautiful Terrace, BC, a fun and family-oriented community, with many local amenities and access to an abundance of arts, culture and outdoor activities including incredible fishing, skiing, mountain biking and hiking. ABOUT WESTLAND - Westland Resources provides natural resource management services to a diverse range of clientele throughout Northwest BC. For almost 20 years our services have included strategic, tactical and operational advice; research and assessments; development and permitting; operational implementation, monitoring and supervision; economic and community development; and all-round problem solving. Our clients include First Nations, energy corporations, forest licensees, infrastructure developers, and all levels of government.
RESPONSIBLITIES -The Crew Supervisor / Project Lead will:
• Lead field development of forest roads and cutblocks (cable, ground, and helicopter harvest systems).
• Team Lead for reconnaissance, GPS surveying, level 2 road surveys, timber cruising, and organizing assessments such as terrain stability.
• Prepare road designs, planning maps, cruise plans / compilations, LiDAR analysis, and cutting permits.
• Develop and Mentor Westland’s team of junior staff.
• Provide Team Support and gain experience in other natural resource sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS - Your experience includes:
• Ability to work with planners to layout cutblocks and roads in mountainous terrain (ideally with 3+ years of experience).
• Experienced with GPS and road surveying (level 2), and competent with associated applications such as: RoadEng, ArcMap, and Microsoft Office
• Knowledgeable with timber cruising, log quality and costing.
• Registered with Forest Professionals BC (RFT or RPF). We will also consider applicants with 5+ years of coastal layout experience.
• A team-oriented self-starter who looks for opportunities to improve systems, find efficiencies, and problem solve.
• Open and positive with clients and government agencies
• Experience with waste & residue surveys, and/or wildfire planning would also be an asset.
