Natural Resources Extension Program Instructor
Opportunity
Vancouver Island University’s Natural Resources Extension Program (NREP) is seeking independent contract instructors to join our team and deliver BC’s most highly recommended industry-recognized natural resource programs. Ideally, candidates will be proficient in either terrestrial, marine, or aquatic assessment methodology, and will have experience working in-community and utilizing methodologies for teaching field-skills in an instructional or mentorship role alongside first nations, government, and industry, providing guidance and support in the progressive and ever- changing natural resource/environmental sector.
NREP is recognized for providing leading edge methodology and field training, and for collaborating with professional associations in designing and implementing strategic training opportunities for its clients. It has improved connections to academic recognition through development of unique micro-credentialing opportunities and works with professional associations for increased access to qualified designations.
Key Assets:
- Minimum RBTech, RPBio Preferred.
- Experience with communicating complicated scientific concepts.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong time and group management skills.
- Knowledge in the subjects related to the taxonomy and ecology of Marine, Aquatic, or terrestrial flora and fauna of B.C.
- Competence with field equipment and logistics.
- Knowledge of various Environmental sampling protocols and techniques.
- Positive attitude and flexibility to go with the flow.
- Experience with environmental projects that meet municipal, provincial and federal standards.
- Familiarity with online and other resources essential to background environmental reviews.
- Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
- Experience managing relationships with senior level stakeholders.

- Ability to provide both group and individual student support.
- Student evaluation that is unbiased and practical.
- Strong ability to communicate both written and verbally in the English language.
- Ability to integrate basic computer skills into instruction.
- Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver's license or equivalent.
- Must be eligible to work in Canada.
- Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
- Willingness to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments.
- Committed to maintaining a learning environment that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive.
Preferred Experience:
- Knowledge of adult learning systems.
- Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs.
- Working with Indigenous communities and working alongside Indigenous partners.
Please note that this position is a contract-based position suitable for individuals who have a flexible schedule or would like to augment their current income. NREP offers competitive rates and unlimited growth potential, depending on availability, course interest, and diversity of subject matter expertise. Frequency of work may be influenced by instructor’s ability to travel.
