Advisor, First Nations Relations

$69,969.42 to $89774.32 annually

The primary duties of the First Nations Relations Advisor are centered on conducting consultations for the use of natural resources on Crown land and determining the impact on First Nations identified or potential traditional use areas.

A skilled and effective written and verbal communicator, you communicate with First Nations on natural resource applications and liaise with ministry staff as an expert on the legal and procedural requirements of First Nations consultation. A collaborative approach is crucial to this role as you successfully establish and maintain productive working relationships.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Degree in the natural resource field or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association, and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience* as outlined below.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area.  (i.e., Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC), Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists).
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Significant experience within the last 15 years, working with First Nations communities and facilitating First Nations consultations and engagement.
  • Experience with constitutional and statutory responsibilities associated with First Nations consultation.

*Related experience includes a combination of the following:

  • Experience in developing and implementing creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience leading or supporting consultation, negotiations, developing and/or supporting agreements, preferably with First Nations.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects and assignments.
